Neuro-Linguistic Programming: A Tool for Developing Behavioral Skills and Competencies

-- Shiv Shankar Tripathi

In today’s competitive business world, managing a knowledge worker has become complex as companies recruit people from across cultures, nationalities and gender in rather a seamless way. Generally, most of the employees who are hired have the necessary technical prerequisites, conceptual skills and to some extent human skills too. However, it is observed that people who join the organizations have generally all the needs fulfilled in the Maslow’s need hierarchy, i.e., the physiological needs, social needs, safety needs, self-esteem needs barring the need of self-actualization. It is the need for self-actualization which plays an important role in the career growth of an employee, especially in the present scenario. Another factor responsible for this is the amount and variety of choice available at their disposal, be it either in terms of careers, people or even relationships. Therefore, in order to understand and support the real worth of an individual, to enable him to understand himself better in order to understand others in a better way, it is the responsibility of the trainers to understand various psychological patterns of behavior of an individual. This paper focuses on neuro-linguistic programming, a tool that recognizes various psycho-behavioral patterns of an individual.

E-mail Etiquettes: Dos and Don’ts

--Neha Gupta

Written communication has many pros and cons. Because of its rigid nature, written communication forms the basis of legal action. In the current scenario where computer has changed the shelf-space occupied earlier by the hard copies of papers, e-mails have replaced the usual modes of correspondence and have become a much faster way to disseminate information and work. As norms have made the task easier, etiquettes related to e-mail are supposed to be known and practiced by people who are corresponding through these upgraded technological mediums. These norms and rules cannot be generalized due to cultural, language and semantic barriers. Nevertheless, there happen to be some basic rules that one must remember while sending an e-mail. This paper discusses some such important rules to be followed while drafting e-mails.

-- M Showry and K V L Manasa

In today’s escalating world of competition, professionals are often under pressure to achieve more than what they are capable of. Hence, a professional must sound more impressive and effective, influence others more favorably, and enhance relationships with colleagues, customers and managers alike. According to Harold S Geneen, the five essential entrepreneurial skills which determine one’s success are Concentration, Discrimination, Organization, Innovation and Communication. “Communication—the human connection—is the key to personal and career success.” Effective communication skills are decisive for professional excellence and can provide brand new direction to one’s career. Many professionals sincerely desire to communicate effectively but do not really know how to become adept at communication. This paper attempts to dwell on the importance of effective communication in professional life. Sound knowledge of the subject, systematic and meticulous delivery and appropriate body language are the crucial building blocks of effective communication. Those who relentlessly make assiduous efforts to master these building blocks of communication can overcome the impediment of ineffective communication and become effective communicators.

Challenges in Teaching Business Communication to Management Students from a Rural Background

-- S Gayathri

Business communication is a part of the management studies curriculum, and this paper gives an account of the teaching-learning process adopted for a batch of postgraduate management students who were from a rural background. Managerial Skill Development is a subject included in the final year MBA curriculum with the aim of enabling students to build their management and communication skills. For these students, who studied in a Tamil medium school till class twelve, with minimal exposure to English during their undergraduate course, conversing in English, let alone business etiquettes and soft skills, was an alien concept. However, communication skills had never been more inevitable and essential for the acquisition of employability as they are today. Business communication empowers the students to be competent in their learning as well as work environment. As future managers, they ought to have the confidence and a grasp over the language to be able to communicate their ideas effectively. An effective approach towards the subject from the faculty and the right attitude from students could definitely make a difference.
